7 reasons to love eco-friendly furniture

It’s no secret that looking after the planet is part of the Kave DNA and the sustainable way is just how we do things. But how does this translate to furniture? When you make the choice to invest in eco-friendly furniture, you’re doing a whole lot more than you think!

1. It’s made from natural materials

All furniture made from natural materials such as cotton or fibres such as bamboo, rattan, etc. leaves a smaller ecological footprint because it avoids the use of chemicals. As a result, the production methods used are much more sustainable.

If wood is also sourced from forests with controlled felling, we’re automatically contributing to protecting the environment.

As well as all this, natural materials are always much longer-lasting and when you choose to get rid of them, you can give them a new lease of life by restoring or recycling them. As natural as life itself.

2. It has a natural and sustainable finish

Water-based finishes using natural products such as wax or oil avoid the use of chemicals. Using these types of finishes prevents harmful gases, known by their scientific name as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), from being released by the chemicals often used to protect furniture.

3. It reduces waste

Sustainable furniture can also be made from recycled materials such as glass, plastic fibres from recycled bottles recovered from the ocean, wood reclaimed from old buildings or gathered from the forest floor, and fabric from leftover lengths. You’d be amazed at what you can achieve by recycling!

4. It’s socially responsible

Sustainability goes far beyond the product. Knowing where, how and by whom furniture is produced is the key to assessing the impact it has on its surroundings. For example, we can ensure socially responsible production, guarantee fair employment policies and practices, and contribute to initiatives that promote a more equal society.

5. It’s designed to be practical

We refuse to choose between design and sustainability. In our eyes, good furniture design already takes full responsibility for protecting our environment as much as possible throughout the production process. A key factor is to make highly functional and durable pieces that are designed to last lifetime.

6. It’s very now

Our designers are constantly on the look-out for new trends, staying one step ahead and using recycled, eco-friendly materials and innovative techniques. A good design shouldn’t just be attractive and practical, it should respect the planet and the people that live on it.

For example, at Kave Home we work closely with Elisava (Barcelona School of Design and Engineering) to develop lines of research and analyse how we can reduce our environmental impact.

7. It’s made by a brand that cares

A brand that is committed to the environment looks beyond the creation of sustainable products. Sustainability covers many aspects: materials, production, suppliers, the company and its infrastructure, designers, corporate social responsibility, and much more.

For us, this translates to many other factors, such as ensuring our central offices are energy efficient by following rigorous criteria to make them as eco-friendly as possible. Thermal insulation materials are used to reduce energy consumption and we’ve installed adjustable light intensity with sensors and passive soundproofing panels to prevent noise pollution.

It is also a priority for us to allocate part of the brand’s resources to non-profit initiatives and projects aimed at creating a better environment for everyone. In our eyes, choosing a piece of furniture means a whole lot more than the item itself.
