We love it when everything’s tidy, but it’s not always so simple. Luckily, we can consult the world expert on orderliness, Marie Kondo. In this blog post, we share some tips to help you emulate her approach to maintaining an organised bedroom.


“Organisation starts with elimination”

This is one of her mottos, and a great place to start. We all accumulate a certain amount of unnecessary clothing in our wardrobes, so it’s time to go through it all, item by item, and ask yourself if you really wear it. A new season is a good time to look at each piece and work out how many times you’ve worn it over recent months. If the answer is 0 - 1, get rid of it. You could always give away your clothes to friends or family – they’re sure to thank you for it and so will your wardrobe. According to Marie Kondo, we should keep around a third of all the clothes we own.


Start tidying your bedroom

Organising things by category is paramount. While we’re on the subject of clothes, make sure you organise them vertically rather than horizontally. This way, you can keep everything within sight. If we’re talking about general bedroom décor, it’s important to classify things by usefulness and how they’re used. Think about which items you need to have at your fingertips, which are purely for decoration, and which are for storage (such as baskets and boxes) that will make your life easier. For Marie Kondo, the key is to keep only what you really use – these items should be stored in a drawer to save space.


Minimalist style in your bedroom

We know that for Marie, a tidy and minimalist style is the winner. To decorate a space like this, choose pieces that add a fresh feel. For example, a minimalist mirror with a simple yet pretty design. Add duvet covers that transmit happiness, peace and calm. We recommend neutral colours for these. Don’t forget, an unmade bed can ruin the sense of order and calm that you want to achieve in your bedroom. So make sure that you make your bed properly every morning so that you get a nice surprise when you come home from work. It’s also very important to change the sheets once a week to keep the room nice and fresh.

For furniture such as your bedside table, chest of drawers or desk, choose pieces that offer storage as well as minimalist design. Maintain this same order and classification we’ve talked about in other rooms, too. As you can see, creating a peaceful and relaxing room is possible, and it all starts with tidiness and a sense of wellbeing.
