Making a living room Feng Shui doesn’t mean using Asian-style decor, contrary to what many people think. Feng Shui's an ancient, Eastern philosophy that we apply to interior design – it’s concerned with how spaces influence the people that live in them. If you want to know how to bring Feng Shui to your living room so that good energy flows freely and your wellbeing improves, take a look at these seven tips for decorating your living room in this style. Good vibes only!

1. The sofa needs to be against the wall

Where we put our furniture is very important for Feng Shui. For example, in the living room it’s better for the sofa to go against the wall. This way, we keep the space uncluttered and have a much more open, holistic view of the room. It’s also important that, as far as possible, you can see all access points (doors, windows, etc) when sitting on the sofa. If you follow these principles, you’ll create a more relaxed atmosphere and encourage social interaction.

2. Tidiness and cleanliness

Who doesn’t like the feeling of having everything clean and tidy? This is really important in Feng Shui to allow a good flow of energy. Get rid of everything you don’t use – you can find a second life for things, recycle them or donate them. Make sure everything has its own place and keep your living room neat and tidy through good planning. If you spend a few minutes doing this every day, you’ll soon start feeling calmer and more at ease and that’ll make all the effort worth it.

3. High-quality materials, natural fabrics and soft colours

The five elements of Feng Shui are water, earth, fire, metal and wood. The key is finding the right balance between these elements so they can be in harmony with each other. It’s easier than it sounds – choose natural materials like wood or metal and mix and match them without using one way more than the other. Natural fabrics in soft tones like off-white or earthy colours are ideal for emitting these feelings of peace and quiet that are so essential in dynamic spaces like the living room. Use this same colour scale when choosing colours for the walls.

4. Let there be light

As we like to say, natural light is everything. However, there needs to be a good distribution of light in a Feng Shui living room, so use floor lamps, wall lights, desk lamps and similar accessories. Always choose warm and indirect light of course – we don’t want the light to overpower us.

5. Plants – for a happy living room and life

Plants are very important as Feng Shui believes they absorb negative energy, purify the air and generate happiness. So, obviously, plants are always a good option for living room decoration.

6. Curves are good

Feng Shui always welcomes shapes that are organic, round and curvy as they soften the atmosphere and help create a constant flow of energy. So shun pointy corners and angles.

7. Use your mirrors

Mirrors are a big deal in Feng Shui. We’re always coming and going from the living room and we do a lot of things in there: we chill out, we relax and, most of all, we spend time with family and friends. As well as adding a sense of light and spaciousness to small living rooms, a mirror will invigorate a living room and make good energy flow.
